PSA World Series 2015

The Brief

The Dubai tournament of the PSA World Series brought the global squash tour to an exhilarating climax. The 2015 edition of the men’s and women’s finals featured the world’s best eight qualified players battling it out for the last title of the season in a round-robin best-of-three format before a knockout semi-finals and finals.

The tournament took place in a 40m x 80m structure located in front of the Burj Khalifa with full glass on one side looking out at Dubai’s iconic landmark. The overall venue was divided into three areas; a glass-built court and grandstand in the centre, a VIP Cocktail area and a leaving reception area.

FLOW was tasked with providing the temporary cooling power for the entire venue with a brief to install a ducted AC solution across the three areas to deliver a consistent temperature. Finally, FLOW had to ensure that the cooling solution did not interfere with games and adhered to strict legislation set by the PSA World Series organisers.

The Solution

In view of the brief, FLOW devised a tailored solution for the three zones, each of which had slightly different requirements and challenges.

For the main arena, where the glass court had been erected and the grandstand was situated, FLOW installed temporary ducting directly onto the ceiling of the structure at around 7-8m in height. This ensured the ducts were high enough to avoid spectators in the top rows of the grandstand and also did not affect the court itself. For the ground floor VIP area, split units were added to compliment the ducts, thereby ensuring cooling at the required levels.

In regards to equipment, FLOW provided over 750T of temporary cooling via water cooled chillers, AHUs, package AC units as well as split AC units which were powered by 1.5 MVA of power generators along with the required mains cable and distribution.

The Verdict

"The PSA World Series is a prestigious event that is held in the most iconic location in Dubai. Despite the complicated brief, sensitivity of the event location and strict guidelines put in place by the tournament organisers, FLOW handled the installation extremely professionally and were adaptable to all of our requirements. It was a pleasure to partner with FLOW on this project and we look forward to many more successful editions to come."
