Middle East Film & Comic Con 2016

The Brief

The region's largest pop culture and entertainment festival, Middle East Film & Comic Con (MEFCC), returned for its fifth year in Dubai in 2016. The three-day event, located across Za'abeel Halls 4, 5 and 6 at Dubai World Trade Centre, featured a host of guests from movies, TV, the comics industry and beyond, including house-hold names and celebrities such as Christopher Lloyd, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Randy Orton, Summer Glau, Nick Frost, Veronica Taylor, Max Landis and Darryl McDaniels.

During this year's event, organisers The Alliance LLC devised an outdoor festival arena to complement the indoor gaming tournaments and other features. The area, measuring approximately 50m x 100m, comprised numerous food and beverage outlets, a stage playing host to musicians and other guest appearances, and a VIP pavilion.

FLOW was asked to provide the cooling for the new outdoor festival area and manage all aspects of the event's power requirements. With MEFCC attracting more than 100 exhibitors, all of which have different power needs, FLOW was required to devise a complex distribution plan to ensure a successful installation and efficient performance.

In addition to the broad exhibitor demands, FLOW was required to provide catering power and an uninterrupted power solution for the main stage area. The brief was considerable - even Tony Stark would have struggled!

The Solution

In the run up to MEFCC, FLOW worked with Alliance to devise an electrical distribution plan that met all exhibitors' requirements, whilst leaving flexibility in the design for any potential power upgrades that were required on an adhoc basis.

Due to our familiarity with the Dubai World Trade Centre, FLOW was able to utilise the cable trenches within the venue to offer a tidy and hidden installation. For the outdoor festival area, FLOW used the temporary structure specification to design a suitable cooling solution utilising its fleet of split AC units. As the outdoor area did not have any house power, FLOW provided a synchronised power generation package to offer an uninterrupted power supply to the entire temporary area.

The Verdict

"FLOW was our power and cooling systems supplier for the Middle East Film & Comic Con Event 2016 and their pre-event support coupled with the expert onsite delivery team made this year's event easier than ever to deliver. The team's willingness to go above and beyond in their efforts to deliver what is normally a taxing and trying event was exceptional. We look forward to working with them on many future events, and hold absolutely no reservation about recommending them to anyone in the future."
